When Is a Sale Not a Sale?

When it doesn’t sell anything, clearly.

Okay, this needs a bit of explanation, but it’s an odd one. So things have been going pretty well sales-wise lately. Colony and Shadow of an Empire just keep ticking away copies, finally moving my book income from “Spare change” to “rent payment.” Or at least, they were, save for this last week.

What happened? Well, I went ahead and put Unusual Events: A “Short” Story Collection on a random sale for the week. Starting a 99 cents. Colony and Shadow were both doing well, so I figured that a nice discount on Unusual Events (Still, to date, my only book to not generate a profit and my lowest selling of all time) would maybe allow it to move a few copies alongside its stronger siblings.

Let me tell you, did that backfire. Instead of Events selling a few copies … all other sales stopped dead.

No, I’m not kidding. Fine one day and then wham! Down came the wall. All sales stopped dead. Even Kindle Unlimited reads dried up, going from a steady number of reads per day to almost nothing.

And then on Monday, the sale was over, and what happened? The numbers took a few days to go back up, but now they’re moving back to where they were.

Honestly? I’m as confused as anything about this one. The only theory I’ve got is that people who were looking at getting their hands on a copy of Colony or Shadow saw that Events was on sale and decided to wait until one of them was on sale, maybe?

That’s literally the only theory I have. As I watch the numbers slide back to normal post sale, that’s all I can offer. And even that doesn’t explain the KU numbers dropping into the abyss.

Is it coincidence? If so, it’s one of the strangest coincidences I’ve seen. And like I said, I have no explanation. Maybe Events is even less-appealing than I thought, so much so that it taints all other books based on its price?

I have no idea. Regardless, I thought it was interesting. Guess that’s one mistake I won’t be making the future. Unusual Events goes on sale with everything else, or not at all!

Tighten the Belt

So, continuing the week-long run of “I’ve got news and stuff to say!” here we are at Wednesday. And, to no one’s surprise, there’s still stuff going on.

So, today’s post? A financial update. Effectively, I’m tightening my belt and going into drought mode.

Why? Simple. The part-time job I have has hit some dry spells in these summer months. Said part-time job already cut corners where it could, but now that we’re in the realm of little business for the next month, that means fewer hours for everyone. Fewer hours means less pay and, well … yeah, a tighter belt for the month. And odd gigs around town.

The interesting bit about this is that Shadow of an Empire launched just around the time everything started to slow down. And while Shadow of an Empire‘s launch wasn’t as strong as Colony‘s (the Sci-Fi Epic continues to wear the crown) it was strong, and as of right now has left a longer-lasting tail.

Psst! Over Here!

Pssst! You! Hey, you! That’s right, over here! Looking for some good book deals? Sure you are! Well, don’t look around or make it super obvious—I said don’t look around!—but there’s like, a secret sale or something going right now. Limited time only.

Yeah, I don’t know why either. Something about the date. And it probably won’t last because, well, that clock keeps ticking. Time’s moving forward.

Anyway, now you know. The secret sale is live! Pass it along and move along, quick, before someone spots us. Go see what you can find!

Quick News Post

Sorry for the lateness. Had work yesterday and I’ve been battling a gnarly chest-and-throat cold that refuses to die. Now, really quick, some news!

Unusual Events

First up, Unusual Events: A “Short” Story Collection, is currently 50% off. It actually has been for almost a week, but being blasted by being sick, I completely neglected to mention it. In any case, you can grab this collection of ten “short” stories (there are two novellas in there, and only three or four of them are actually short enough to warrant the short story tag) for just $2.99!

Second, the Alpha 2 Reading of Shadow of an Empire is moving along, but at this point I’d like to get some more eyes on it. If you’re interested in being an Alpha Reader (and if you’re confused as to what an Alpha Reader does, check this handy post here on the topic), drop me a line! The more eyes, the better.

Third, LTUE, or Life, The Universe, and Everything, the writing con, is coming up! Next week, in fact, from February 15th-17th. Unfortunately, this year I will only be able to make it to one day due to costs, and that will be the first day, the 15th. Still, if you can at all make it to one of the best writing cons for chatting with authors and learning about the craft, this is it. And if you’re going to be there that first day and want to put a face to the words, let me know! I’m always happy to talk with fans!

Okay, last one, I promise. This one has been on the back-burner for a while, but with everything sort of reaching an equilibrium, there’s no sense in me not destabilizing my carefully balanced load with some new business. I pose to you readers a question: How would you feel about doing a live Q&A session over Discord? I get a mic, you readers get questions, I drop a link here on the site at a pre-planned time, and I spend an hour or so answering questions on a variety of topics? Anyone interested in that?

Right, that’s it for the news! Onward to today’s Being a Better Writer post!

The Halloween Sale

In case you missed it, this Halloween weekend is home to all kinds of spooky sales on my work. Through October 31st, you’ll be able to pick up One Drink and Dead Silver for free, as well as find Unusual Events: A “Short” Story Collection for half-price and the stellar Colony for 25% off!

You can head on over to my Books page to preview each one, read a free sample, and then score a copy for yourself!

Hardware, Halloween, and Other Updates

You know the deal, guys! It’s a news post. And there’s a lot of it this week, but I have categorized it, so skim through and see what the updates are!

Hardware Horrors

You might have noticed I’ve been quiet this week.

Like, quieter than normal. And it’s not just here. I’ve been almost 100% silent across all my usual online hangouts. And the reason for that is actually pretty simple. Right now, I’m writing this post through a tethered connection with my cell phone.

No, Google Fiber didn’t go down. My phone’s buzzing through them. The ethernet port on my desktop shorted out. Thankfully, without taking the rest of my motherboard with it.

Yeah, I’m still nervous about that one.

For those who aren’t computer literate, however, the ethernet port is what you plug the internet into if you’re not using wi-fi. Desktops don’t usually come with wi-fi, and I prefer the speeds and latency that a cable offers over a wireless connection (it’s a bit more reliable).

In any case, I’ve ordered an ethernet card for my desktop, but it won’t even ship until the 30th. So … I’m a little disconnected at the moment. Which leads me into my next point here—

The Rolling Sale – Colony

The date has been set. The time is near. Starting August 10th and running through August 16th, the penultimate step of the Rolling Sale will go live, and Colony will be 63% off!

Yes, you heard that properly. 63% off. In other words, you’ll be able to pick Colony up for $2.99!

Now, if you’ve been following the rolling sale so far, you know how this works. A title is put on sale and purchases, Kindle Unlimited reads, and reviews all go toward unlocking discounts on the next title in line. The difference here is that Colony is the latest book I’ve released chronologically, right? So what could possibly come next?

Well, I’m glad you asked. Because as it turns out, something can come next. Because I’ve got another book I’m working on getting out either late this year or early next year. ASAP, really. You may have heard of it? Shadow of an Empire? It’s a fantasy western.

And it is the final destination of the Rolling Sale. Except this time, rather than unlocking a sale for an existing book, sales of Colony will unlock a discounted launch and pre-order price for Shadow of an Empire. That’s right, the price the book will be initially offered at, all through the pre-order phase and through the first week of being up for sale. After that, the price will return to the standard launch price.

So yeah, units moved, KU reads, and reviews left on Amazon or Goodreads for Colony during the upcoming week-long sale will provide a discount to the release of Shadow of an Empire. Which, BTW, doesn’t have a release date yet, as it’s still in Alpha. Looking to release this year, however.

So then, just as before, let’s have a look tiers available for Shadow of an Empire to achieve. Fair warning, these are the toughest tiers yet. It’s offset a little by the steep discount of Colony, and a bit to reflect that this is for a title that hasn’t even released yet.

  • Tier One: 0 – 10 Units Moved – $7.99 – None
  • Tier Two: 11 – 25 Units Moved – $6.99 – 13%
  • Tier Three: 26 – 50 Units Moved – $5.99 – 25%
  • Tier Four: 51 – 100 Units Moved – $4.99 – 37%
  • Tier Five: 101+ Units Moved – $3.99 – 50%

All right, there you have it! The finale of the Rolling Sale has shown it’s hand at last! If you’ve not picked up a copy of Colony yet, then this Thursday is the time to do it!

The Rolling Sale Rolls On

Wednesday has arrived, and we’re halfway through the week! As well as halfway through the rolling sale for Unusual Events: A “Short” Story Collection. Currently, it’s unlocked the second sale tier for Colony, meaning it will come at 25% off, but there’s still time for further goals to be met!

Don’t forget, Kindle Unlimited reads and reviews help towards moving that counter up as well. Though with this sort of thing, even sharing news of the sale can help. The further it goes, the deeper the next discount becomes!

The Rolling Sale – Round 3!

It is time! Round 3 of the Rolling Sale has BEGUN!

Which means, if you’ve been following along, that Unusual Events: A “Short” Story Collection is now 50% off! Huzzah!

Even better, in the tradition of the Rolling Sale, a purchase of Unusual Events this week is tracked on the counter to the left of the page there. As that counter continues to move up, it in turn boosts the sale of the next title in line: Colony! So right now, when Colony‘s turn arrives, it’ll be at a 13% discount. However, once more than three copies of Unusual Events have been sold, that discount climbs to 25%! And so on, upwards through eight tiers. The last of these? Colony becomes free.

So, what are the numbers to reach of each tier? Take a look!

  • 0 – 3: Tier 1 – 13% Off
  • 4 – 9: Tier 2 – 25% Off
  • 10 – 15: Tier 3 – 37% Off
  • 16 – 22: Tier 4 – 50% Off
  • 23 – 30: Tier 5 – 63% Off
  • 31 – 40: Tier 6 – 75% Off
  • 41 – 60: Tier 7 – 88% Off
  • 61+: Tier 8 – FREE!!!

Now, a quick reminder. If you’re a Kindle Unlimited customer, you don’t need to worry about buying a copy to contribute to the Rolling Sale. As before, each read of Unusual Events through Kindle Unlimited will count as a unit moved as well, so there’s a metric for that! Load Unusual Events up and start reading!

Or, if you’ve already read it, you can still contribute to the tiers moving up by leaving a review on Unusual EventsAmazon or Goodreads page! Each review will count as five units moved for the rolling sale! So even if you’ve already read it, you can still kick in and help!

Or, you know, you can just share the news about the rolling sale on Facebook, Reddit, or any other site or place you may hang out on online or in real life. The more the word is spread, the higher that number can climb!

You’ve got one week! Good luck! Let’s see that discount climb!
