Like a Dragon

Hello readers! I’m back!

“Was I ever gone?” some of you might be wondering. Well … Remember how I got that Covid-19 vaccination on Monday? I noted as such in Being a Better Writer that day, then after I finished my post went right to work and chugged along. Well …

Let’s just say I got walloped. By late that night, I was shivering with fever so bad I was almost dropping things, and I ended up swiping every blanket in my apartment and piling them high on my bed to stay warm that night. And then, of course, in the tradition of fevers, having wild dreams and waking up way too hot … and then being way too cold once more. The fever broke by morning, but the fatigue and stiffness stuck, and the next night I slept until 2 PM the following day …

Yeah, no writing was had in the last two days. My brain was not in a place where writing—good writing, anyway—could happen. Just looking at the errors I made and had to correct posting online was proof enough.

This all said, do not take this as a recommendation against the vaccine. No, instead it’s the opposite. Get the vaccine, but plan ahead. This will probably knock you on your butt for a while. Plan accordingly, and don’t let your boss tell you that you can’t take time off to recover from the vaccine (in fact, if they tell you that, your boss is sadly a deadbeat skag-licker, and should be acknowledged accordingly).

But seriously: Do your part. Get vaccinated. Better a few days of discomfort than a week, or a month, or worst of all, transmitting the virus to someone who won’t survive it.

Now, other news! I would like to point out to all you readers that the Dragon Award Nominations are open again once more, this time for the period of 7/1/2020 to 6/30/2021. You can nominate here, but before you click that link and get to it nominating your favorite works from the above time period, I would like to note that Axtara – Banking and Finance is eligable for nomination in the “Best Young Adult/Middle Grade Novel” category. Am I going to recommend that for a nomination?

Well duh, yeah. I’d be a fool not to. Especially after seeing so many other posts from authors promoting their own book for spots.

Now I’ll be real, despite Axtara breaking into the global market (by the way, hello Italy!), I I know I don’t have much chance of winning a nomination. It’d be fantastic, but it’s unlikely.

But even so, I’d still ask you readers who have loved it to consider giving her the nomination for Best YA.

And with that … I’ve got two days of sick to catch up from when it comes to working on Starforge. Not that my time was totally lost. I watched The Adventures of Tintin once more (currently free on YouTube) and played Into the Breach, a title I literally bought several years ago just to get my hands on its soundtrack (a good chunk of Starforge has actually been written listening to it) and found it to be just as good as people claimed. And blisteringly hard. Oh, and grim. It is, however, one of the more clever Sci-Fi uses of time-travel as a mechanic. There’s little to spoil here, but basically it takes the idea that the moment you go into the past you create an alternate timeline and runs with it. The result is that in a war of desperation where mankind is being wiped out, every time they lose, these time-travelers jump to another timeline. Oh, and every time they win. They just keep going to alternate worlds where things are a little different, but always the Vek are there, wiping out mankind. And so they fight until they die … or lose or win, jump to another timeline to start all over.

Simple, and sweet, but still a clever premise.

And with that, I’ve got Sci-Fi of my own to write!

Last Chance to Nominate for the Dragon Awards!

Hey you! That’s right, you! Did you know that Nominations for the Dragon Awards close on the 20th of July? That’s right, and today is the 18th. So if you haven’t nominated for the awards yet, now you’re down to the wire.

Again, you don’t have to nominate something in every category. You can nominate in just the categories you’ve found some winners in.

Shadow of an Empire is eligible for nomination, by the way, because of its release date. If you’ve read it, and think it deserves the honor, then go ahead an nominate it! The Dragon Awards are open to indie nominations!

You can make your nominations here!

Another Reminder to Nominate for the Dragon Awards!

Exactly what the title says. The Dragon Awards are coming, and the window to nominate for your favorites from the last year is closing swiftly, with each tick of the clock! So click the link and get out there and either A) start nominating or B) Start building your list so you can nominate before the time is no longer.

A reminder: You don’t have to nominate in every category. You can nominate just the ones you wish to nominate for and leave the others blank. You don’t have to panic to come up with something for a category you’re not familiar with.

A second reminder: Shadow of an Empire is eligible for nomination. Whether or not you nominate it is up to you, and what you’ve read this year. But it is eligible.

That’s all. I’ve got work to do on Hunter/Hunted!

2018 Dragon Awards Nominations are Open!

It’s that time of year, readers! The nominations for the 2018 Dragon Awards are open! You can click the link and nominate this last year’s (July 2017-End of June 2018) best Science-Fiction and Fantasy novels for the running of … well, the best!

I’ve supported The Dragon Awards every year since they’ve opened, because it’s an open award, decided by the public. Anyone can vote, not just a select few. Anyone can nominate, not just a select few. And the more people vote and nominate, the more representative the award is of what fans consider the year’s Best Science-Fiction and Fantasy.

Speaking of which, unlike last year, this year I’m eligible! That’s right, Shadow of an Empire‘s release date puts it squarely in this year. So if it was your favorite Fantasy novel this year, it’s 100% ready for your nomination! You know, just in case it was (and I’ve already heard from some that yes indeed, Sali and Meelo’s adventure was definitely in that category).

But either way, nominate for the Dragon Awards!

The Dragon Awards Now Open for Voting!

I got the e-mail last night, and am about to open it and cast my votes! The nomination phase is complete, and now it’s time to vote on the year’s best Science-Fiction and Fantasy!

If you’ve nominated, you’ve probably already received your e-mail telling you to vote, but if not, you can sign up to receive a ballot here and get cracking!

Again, I have no idea what’s on the ballot, since I haven’t opened it yet. I’m doing that and casting my votes as soon as this post goes up. But I’m eager! And excited!

Go vote!

EDIT: And done! I have voted! Now to wait!

Colony didn’t make the final list, sadly. Ah well, it was a long shot, though I do know it had a couple of nominations, at least if I trust my fans, which I do. Next year, Dragons! I’ve got a fantasy-western coming out soon!

The Rolling Sale – Round 2! (And Dragon Award Reminder!)

The final results are in! One Drink moved 142 units and garnered three new reviews, for a final tally of 172. I’ll admit, it was a lot less than I’d expected, considering it has reached over a thousand copies in a single five-day freebie run several times before. I actually did expect it to quite easily shatter 500 moved, and make Dead Silver free. Market saturation, maybe? I don’t know.

But, I do know the results, and the results are that One Drink’s final tally was enough to knock Dead Silver down by 34%. Which means, starting Monday, July 24th and running through Friday, July 28th, Dead Silver will be marked down from its normal “heroic” price of $2.99 to $1.99! Two bucks for a 450-page mystery novel? Pretty good deal.

Of course, that’s not all. If that was all that was going on with Dead Silver, it would barely warrant a special post. No, that date also marks the beginning of Round 2 of the Rolling Sale! Which means that copies sold and reviews added once again start adding up to massive discounts for the next title in line. Which is—Are you ready for this?Unusual Events: A “Short” Story Collection!

Now, the nice thing about this next title (Unusual Events) is that there’s a much wider array of discounts going for it. It is a more costly title, after all (it’s still on “veteran” status in age). That, and the numbers needed to unlock the various sale tiers are much lower than Dead Silver‘s were. Why? Because One Drink was free, but Dead Silver is only at a 33% discount. So the tier numbers have been adjusted to reflect this. Additionally, the value of a review in terms of units moved has been adjusted as well.

So, how many tiers are there, and how many units need to be moved to unlock each deal? Here we go!

Deals Unlocked for Unusual Events Per Units of Dead Silver Moved:

  • 0 units moved: Original Price: $5.99
  • 1 – 3 units moved: 17% Discount – $4.99
  • 4-8 units moved: 33% Discount – $3.99
  • 9-15 units moved: 50% Discount – $2.99
  • 15- 25 units moved: 66% Discount – $1.99
  • 26-50 units moved: 84% Discount – $0.99
  • 51+ units moved: 100% Discount – FREE!

Now, the lower number of units moved in this case does necessitate a small change to one other number as well: Reviews will not count as ten units moved with Dead Silver, but five. It’s a necessary change to keep the tiers from being too easy to leapfroged by just a few individuals. The goal of a rolling sale is to get everyone involved!

So, same as before, units of Dead Silver moved will unlock successively higher tiers of deals for Unusual Events. Here’s all the ways you can contribute to that number:

  • Buy a copy of Dead Silver during the period of July 24th through July 28th
  • Read a copy of Dead Silver via Kindle Unlimited (This counts!)
  • Leave a review of Dead Silver on Amazon.com OR Goodreads to add 5 units moved to the total!

Ready? Set! You’ve got until Monday, relax! But then, GO!

Now, two other bits of news here. The first is that the SUBMISSION DEADLINE for The Dragon Awards for excellence in Science-Fiction and Fantasy is July 24th! Which means this weekend is the last chance you’ll have to nominate your picks for the best of Sci-Fi and Fantasy in a wide array of categories for July 2016-2017! You don’t have to nominate something in every category, but there’s bound to be something you’ve read/seen/played with this many categories!

Speaking of which, Colony IS eligible for nomination. And yes, The Dragon Awards are okay with authors outright saying “Vote for/nominate me!” So at my urging, you can totally nominate one of my own books. Do I expect a win? Not very likely. But a nomination would be awesome … and you never know! Colony is a pretty freaking fantastic book according to all the reviews, responses, and the like. So if it got its name out there …

Anyway, it’s your ballot, so fill it out how you’d like. Just, you know, fill it out before the end of the weekend!

Now for one last little note. Both the BOOKS and the WRITING SAMPLES pages accessed by the tabs at the top of the site have been overhauled! Both now contain embed links to Amazon samples of each of my books, meaning you can just click and link and start reading a short sample of each book without the muss and fuss of going to the book’s page on Amazon, clicking the cover, loading the popup … etc. You just click the link, and a new tab opens dedicated to letting you read a free sample in a nice approximation of a kindle layout! Handy! Good on Amazon for this feature; it’s much better!

All right, that’s all the news for today! See you Monday!

Happy Independence Day!

Yup, I’m an American. And that means that once a year, when July 4th rolls around, I freaking love it.

Okay, yes, I know it’s tomorrow. But back home, when I was younger, it was a multi-day celebration (I believe it’s up to a week of events, now).

Anyway, long, roundabout way of saying no Being a Better Writer post today or tomorrow. It’s the 4th! Go light some fireworks, set up some boom. Do not light a forest on fire, though. Play responsibly, people! But if you’re American (or just want to celebrate the date of American Independence since we celebrate with lots of boom), have some fun! Get the grill out! Read a ridiculous pulp adventure! Whatever!

Oh, speaking of reading, though … Did you know that the Nominations for The Dragon Awards close in just 21 days, not counting today? That’s right, three weeks from today, the nomination period will be over! Which means that you’ve only got three weeks to check out all the different nominations you can make, form your own list, and hit submit! Don’t forget, whatever you nominate did have to release during the July 1st 2016 to June 30th, 2017 period though. After all, this award is for the new stuff released in the last year.

So, you’ve got three weeks to finalize your nominations! Get to it!

And enjoy your 4th of July. I’ll see you all later this week.

Upcoming Sale Reminder! Plus The Dragon Awards!

Just a weekend reminder to mark your calendar for the upcoming 24-hour Sale on April 19th! That’s only eleven days away! For a single period of 24 hours, every book I’ve ever written will be discounted. Even Colony! Here’s the breakdown:

One Drink: Free!
Dead Silver: 75% Off!
Unusual Events: A “Short” Story Collection: 50% Off!
Colony: 25% Off!

If you’re looking to fill out your collection, or perhaps to share one of your favorites with a friend, April 19th will be the day to watch!

Also, don’t forget about The Dragon Awards! Nominations are still open, and will be until June 24th of this year! Time to let the world know what you found to be the best book, game, show, or more of the last year! And, while we’re at it, Colony is eligible for nomination, so if you think it’s worth it, you can nominate it!

Anyway, enjoy your weekend, and mark your calendars!

Kindle Unlimited, LTUE, and Other Things

KINDLE UNLIMITED

So, I actually like seeing reads for my books on Kindle Unlimited. Especially for Colony. And not just because Colony is long enough that I pretty much make the same amount of money off of a KU read as I do a purchase. Nor because I like KU—which, for the record, I do; it’s as close as we’ve gotten to “Netflix for books” so KU readers, enjoy! But because it’s one of the closest available methods I have to tracking reader’s reactions to my work short of reviews, ratings, and sales.

See, KU gives me, the author, access to the daily page count totals for each of my books. Someone read 100 pages in a day? I can see that. Not who it was, nor when save a date, but I just get to see that someone’s reading my book.

The thing is, I can sort of track someone’s engagement with my books. And I can see how, over a few days, they get sucked further and further in, until reading Colony is all they’re doing. The first day, someone will read maybe 100 pages. The next day they’ll read 100 more. Then the day after that … they’re reading 150. Following that? 300. From there it turns into a sprint to the finish—we’re talking 500 or 600 words in a single day.

I love seeing these little patterns in my KU readers. It’s a good way to tell how readers are being engaged with my books—they’re getting caught up in the action as the book moves towards the end! Granted, I still get those who read through the entire 1100+ page work in a single day, which is also good and fun to see, but it’s pretty satisfying to “see” a reader go through this progression of “Okay, this is pretty good” followed by “Okay, this is really good” to “Drop everything I need to know how this ends now!
